the actual mobilisation of the troops in World War 1 was the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, there were a number of other international scenarios which contributed to the climate
in which one single and apparently isolated event could result in the long and bloody conflict which devastated most of Europe for almost five years.
There was, for instance, the perception on the part of the Slav nations
that they were only precluded from uniting because of past invasions by Turkey and Germany, and there was a constant threat of Serbian nationalist uprisings to threaten the Austro-Hungarian empire.
The Empire itself was not in a position to allow a great deal of expansion of Serbian rights, since to do so would have opened a door for all the
other smaller states within the Empire to demand greater freedom and, eventually, independence. This was not something which the Hapsburgs were capable of contemplating as a viable option for their
subject states, even in the future, since their priority was the maintenance of the stability of the Empire. The reaction to the Archdukes assassination was to take to task the
members of the Serbian government who had been associated with it, and to reinforce the idea that Austria wielded ultimate power in the region. Even though the assassins themselves were
dealt with stringently, it seems evident that the main focus of Austrias attention was on those who had supported them, both within the government and other organisations.
