with the potential to exert a tremendous deleterious impact to both the personal and the professional aspects of our lives. The worlds most successful people do not achieve that success
through procrastination but through prompt attention to obligation. They have a "coping model of success" (Ten Causes of Procrastination, 2004). Less successful people utilize a maladaptive coping model.
The impact can be far reaching. McCown and Roberts (1994) relate that: "40%
of people having experienced loss due to procrastination and just over 25% of people experiencing chronic debilitating procrastination" (Etiology- The Causes of Procrastination, 2004).
Interestingly, the tendency for procrastination increases up until the early twenties, the point where it plateaus then begins to take a
downward swing until individuals reach their sixties and procrastination once again levels out (Etiology- The Causes of Procrastination, 2004). The tendency for procrastination is not correlated with any inherent
inability to accomplish something but rather with a personality trait that exhibits a tendency to put something off rather than to just do it. One web site describes a
procrastinator as: "someone who knows what (s)he wants to do, in some sense can do
it, is trying to do it-yet doesnt do it" (Etiology- The Causes of Procrastination, 2004).
