up. It was a way of relating the theme that cancer is a taboo subject. In some way, that is still true. Some continue to call it the Big C.
Sometimes, victims are spared the information by their families so they can die without the added stress of knowing they have a fatal disease. Cancer has in fact become a
dreaded disease as in many cases it kills. There have been many studies conducted in terms of treatment, etiology, and possible cures. Cancer is still a killer, but finding the
roots of this disease can provide new hope. What actually does cause cancer? The answer is just as illusive as the disease itself. It is important to recognize that
there are different types of cancer, and that while cancers are similar to one another, there are different kinds of cancers are attached to different causes. In studying the
causes and mechanisms that lead to breast cancer, for example, it seems that molecular epidemiology in determining the connections between environmental exposures and genetic susceptibilities will eventually give the world
important insights into breast cancer development (Chang, 1998). Until that time, it will be a mystery. There have been numerous studies on breast cancer, but nothing conclusive. Certain links have
been made with diet, and then there have been unsubstantiated claims by women who live on Long Island, New York-where there are an inordinately high number of cases-that the power
lines are what cause breast cancer. Whether it is the power lines or not, the idea that an environmental influence may be the culprit is not unfounded. There have been
many cases found where the environment was seemingly responsible for cancer clusters. A recent report by scientists led by Sir Richard Doll, does point to electricity pylons as being the
