in Causing Poverty The research Ive done indicates that some authorities now believe that, in some instances, the way people think about poverty may explain their relationship to it.
Beliefs about poverty fall into three categories: individualistic, structuralist and fatalistic (Hunt, 1996). Individualistic thinking uses characteristics of persons to explain their poverty; structuralist thinking sees the socioeconomic
system as the cause of poverty; and fatalistic thinkers see non-socialstructural forces such as luck or fate as the main cause of poverty (Hunt, 1996). Not surprisingly, most Americans
fall into the camp of individualistic thinkers: they believe that the sources of poverty can be traced to characteristics of the poor themselves, whether that be "lack of a
proper work ethic, the lack of ability, [or] other character defects" (Hunt, 1996, p. 293). The idea that poverty is caused by the "perceived personal deficiencies of those who
are poor" is consistent with the belief held by many Americans that the poor are to blame for their poverty (Hunt, 1996, p. 293). In his study, Hunt found that
"blacks are significantly more structuralist that whites in their thinking about poverty" (they see the system rather than the individual as the cause of the problems) (Hunt, 1996, p. 293).
This is not surprising, given the history of blacks in America: centuries of slavery followed by another 150 years of active discrimination has shown them that the system
doesnt work where theyre concerned (Hunt, 1996). But Hunt also found that minorities tend to believe in the individualistic approach to explaining poverty, which is not what we would
