in their lives. This paper discusses the causes of depression, and the effects of the condition, as far as both can be identified. Overview Strong emotions are part of human
life; at times we all feel grief, anxiety or great happiness and such feelings are normal ("Causes of Mood Disorders" 1). However, when such feelings "...persist-or when they occur spontaneously,
seemingly out of the blue-and begin to interfere with our ability to function," then they become troublesome ("Causes of Mood Disorders" 1). In these cases, a diagnosis of "mood disorder"
may be made; such disorders comprise both bipolar disorder and depression ("Causes of Mood Disorders" 1). Such disorders are also referred to as "affective" disorders ("Causes of Mood Disorders" 1).
Causes of Depression The causes of depression are still not well understood, despite the fact that so many people suffer from the condition at some point in their lives. The
symptoms however are well known: "Major hallmarks of depression include a persistent low or sad mood, decreased or absent interest in almost all activities, loss of self-confidence, and a sense
of worthlessness" ("Causes of Mood Disorders"1). Like bipolar disorder, depression tends to be episodic; that is, it consists of "bouts of illness ... separated by periods of no symptoms and
feelings of relative well-being" ("Causes of Mood Disorders" 1). While the causes of depression are still not known with certainty, it appears that the disorder may be caused by "some
