end until 1945; that World War II was a continuation of the First War with a break in the middle (The Great Wars, nd). On June 28, 1914, Garvrilo
Princip, a Serbian, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Hapsburg throne, and his wife Sophie (The Great Wars, nd; Pearce, 1997). This set off a chain of events and
within weeks, all major powers in Europe were at war - Germany declared war on Russia on August 1 (The Great Wars, nd; Pearce, 1997). The adoption of the German
Schlieffen Plan brought Britain and France into the war (Pearce, 1997). The assassination of the heir to the throne was the event that could be to represent the straw
that broke the camels back. The assassination represented the breaking point for Austria in its dealings with Serbia (Pearce, 1997). A number of other factors played a part in the
outbreak of this, the Great War. Hostility and aggression had been going on between and among different nations in Europe for years, fueled by a rising tide of nationalism. The
traditions and problems dated back so many years that it would be nearly impossible to say for certain exactly what events caused World War I. No matter which events in
history would be chosen as those leading to this war, the list would omit some important happenings and exaggerate the importance of others (Pearce, 1997). Different historians select different points
