A 5 page paper. Slavery is most often cited as the cause of the American Civil War but like any war, there were a number of underlying causes besides the issue of slavery. The Northern and Southern states had been in conflict since before the Constitution was signed in 1789. A number of formal compromises had eased the tension but it began to flare up again in the early 1800s. This paper discusses the three primary reasons for the tension between the North and the South. those that seem to be the primary causes of a war. In this case, conflict had raged between states for more than thirty years. When the Constitution was adopted by
all states in 1789, the differences between the different States were worked out through compromise but by 1861, these compromises were no longer working. The differences between the Northern, Mid-Western
and Western States and the Southern States had become so pronounced that conflict was inevitable. One of the quarrels had to do with taxes, i.e., tariffs, being paid on the
goods imported to this nation from foreign nations. The Northern businessmen had helped to get the Tariff Act passed, which meant that prices increased for the products imported from Europe.
These products were sold primarily in the Southern States. There was a reason behind the tariff - Northern businessmen hoped to encourage Southerners to purchase products made in the North
instead of purchasing them from Europe. This, rightfully, angered Southerners. The Tariff Act was revised before the Civil War began but Southerners still remembered how the Northerners had treated them
(Leidner, 2000; U.S. Department of Interior, 1998). A second issue was that the political power in the Federal Government was changing. Northern and Mid-Western states were gaining a great
deal of power because their populations were growing so much. At the same time, Southern States were losing power and they began to feel a need for their own independence
from the central Federal authority in Washington, D.C. They believed that each state should make its own laws. It was an issue that was called States Rights (Leidner, 2000; U.S.
Department of Interior, 1998). Some Southern States wanted to secede from the United States and be left alone to govern themselves (Leidner, 2000). These two were political
