In reality, it was for at least a century and a half prior to the onset of Revolutionary conflict that the forthcoming war was foreshadowed through economic struggle, political instability, and an increasing distance between the needs of the American people and the desires of the British crown. It was with the Maryland Charter of 1632 that ties between the old world and the new first began to sever. Encompassing sections of Maryland, Delaware,
Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the document stated that Lord Baltimore would hold the province as "true and absolute lords and proprieties." He was given the powerful freedom of selecting the
type of government to reign as well as the methodology for distributing lands. With this ability to rule as he saw fit, Lord Baltimore became the first to make
governmental decisions without the aid of the British. His example helped future generations to identify with their own distinct systems of government and not with the British. In
fact, one of the only subsequent ties linking the two worlds was that of a fee paid to the royal crown. This point is important as that fee would
