is most prevalent appears to be the huge expectations that people in Western countries, particularly in the US, have in regards to marriage. As one commentator points out, "It is
inevitable that the higher these expectations, the less likely they are to be fulfilled," which is unfortunate, as divorce is much more than a legal procedure due to its numerous
and far-reaching negative effects (Polomeno 13). There are numerous cultural trends that have been identified as causal factors to the increase in divorces, such as "the liberalization of norms
concerning individual choice, the lessening of religious influence, the liberalization of divorce laws leading to the normalization o divorce and marriage breakdown associated with not being happy and fulfilled" (Polomeno
13). Seventy percent of Americans surveyed indicate that they believe the purpose of marriage is for their spouse to make them happy, and, if they are not happy, many assume
that it is because "they picked the wrong person," which ignores the fact that there is no such thing as a "perfectly compatible couple" ("The frayed knot" 22). These causal
factors evolve from the fact that basing marriage on mutual attraction and love is a very new idea, historically speaking (Coontz 7). Stephanie Coontz of The Evergreen State College
states that the "fragility of modern marriage" is related to the same factors that have elevated societys regard for this relationship, that is, the "concentration of emotion, passion, personal identity
and self-validation," which is associated with the concept of modern marriage (Coontz 7). In giving a brief history of divorce, Coontz points out the various ways in which marriage has
been perceived and institutionalized, which shows that the reasons for divorce today are different from those that occurred in the past because the reasons for marriage are different (Coontz 8).
