and that 1% of American teens suffer from them (Hassink, 2004). The two most common types are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, both of which are characterized by the fact
that with the disorder, the sufferer has a distorted image of his or her body and is "obsessed with what he or she eats" (Hassink, 2004). These disorders occur far
more often in women than in men, with only 10% of sufferers being male (Hassink, 2004). People who have anorexia "have an intense fear of being fat" such that they
barely eat at all and may obsess over even a small amount of food (Hassink, 2004). An anorexic "may weigh food before eating it or compulsively count the calories of
everything. It is not unusual for a person with anorexia to also exercise excessively in an attempt to lose weight" (Hassink, 2004). For reasons that are not adequately explained, one
feature of this disease is that anorexics dont see themselves as thin; a person suffering from the condition "can look in the mirror and actually see a fat person" (Hassink,
2004). Bulimia is different from anorexia because "the person with bulimia doesnt avoid eating. Instead, he or she eats a large amount of food then gets rid of it quickly
by vomiting or taking laxatives. This is commonly known as "binge and purge" behavior" (Hassink, 2004). Bulimia also affects more women than men. Some of the warning signs of
anorexia include a weight loss that drops the persons weight to "about 20% below normal"; the person "feels fat" and "exercises excessively" and "denies feeling hungry," even when it is
