Of course, the world according to David Hume is not quite that simple, although he does make much of the concept. A student asks: " What would need to be
the case in order for cause and effect to be necessarily connected?" It seems to be true that people believe that they know the cause of something. In Buddhism,
there is the idea of simultaneous cause and effect. Here, someone initiates an action but it is both a cause and an effect at the same time. Of course, while
it may be the case that an effect always has a cause, it is not always easy to discern that cause. People believe they know the cause of something, but
do they really? For example, someone may spill a drink on the rug because a dog ran past them very rapidly. They yell that the dog "made them" spill the
drink. But perhaps the cause is alcoholism. The individual would not have spilled the drink had he been sober, or the cause may have been the fact that the individual
has MS or CP or some other disease. Another reason might have been that they simply were not paying attention. One can see that there are a myriad of possible
causes for every event and so the cause of an event is not always clear. Hume explains that humans derive their theories of causation due to "a constant conjunction of
objects, and subsequent inference of the mind from one to another" (Hume, 2001). People believe that they know things because they seem plausible. People in their own minds see connections
