the general rate of inflation. There are a number of causes for this increase; looking at some of these causes the potential effects may also be assessed. Pakenham (2004),
notes three main factors that are causing the increases in costs. The first factor is the current emphasis on the provision of crisis care; this is treatment of conditions after
they have become serious (Pakenham, 2004; 43). Treatment at this stage tends to be more costly that treatment earlier in a disease, this combined with changes in lifestyles for example,
increases in fatty diets which is increasing diseases such as cardio vascular heart disease, is increasing the level of these diseases and with the treatment at the more expensive stages
the costs are increasing. Another influence on rising health care costs is the increasing level of life expectancy, which has been increasing across most industrial countries; an increasing aging
population requires a greater level of healthcare (Pakenham, 2004; 44). As individuals become older they are more likely to require health care services compared to their younger counterparts, therefore increasing
numbers of individuals that are surviving into their 80s and 90s cases additional burdens on the healthcare systems (Pakenham, 2004; 44). Third cause of increasing healthcare costs is attributed
to the attitude of the public, with the expectation that will diseases will be treated, and the best treatments possible will be made available (Pakenham, 2004; 44). As medical science
progresses and technology moves forward or potential treatments are available, many of which may be costly, especially in the early stages of development (Pakenham, 2004; 44). As healthcare costs
increase there is a cause and effect relationship, where the effect of the increasing healthcare costs can be assessed. With increasing healthcare costs response of governments as well as healthcare
