outcomes. By looking at cause and effect with the presence of natural dangers that may occur on a south pacific island there is the potential for a number of natural
disasters. These may include events such as hurricanes, floods and tsunamis The model of cause and effect is a important decision making models (Omar and Kleiner, 1997), it is possible
to use this to argue there should be a greater helicopter support presence on the island. Islands in the south pacific tend to be isolated, the main method of
goods being brought in an out tends to rely on the shipping industry, this is because air transportation can be costly and smaller amounts of cargo can be carried. This
itself may be seen as the result of cause and effect due to the cost of fuel and the way that technology incurs costs, the effect being the social preference
for sea trade. The goods carried in and out are mundane and essential goods. This is important to remember when assessing the impact of a natural disaster on a remote
island. If there is a hurricane, flood or tsunami there may be varying degrees of warning for hurricanes these may be days, whereas for a flood or tsunami their
may not be a warning at all. The immediate effects of a disaster can be mixed. If there is warning and as there is with a hurricane then, with local
planning there is likely to be only a small loss of life as a direct result of the hurricane. Local planning will have understood the dangers and hurricane shelters can
protect human life during the storm, this is a planning issue. The problem with unexpected disasters is that they will catch people in the everyday aspects of life, there
