senior year is devoted to taking SATs, applying to colleges, and qualifying for grants and financial aid. However, there are many students (like myself) who become so caught up
in the college fervor that the process of going from point A to point B replaces what should be the primary focus: the reason for going to college. For
me, going to college after graduation was little more than fulfilling obligations and expectations. I was doing what my parents wanted and I wanted to remain with my peer
group. They were all attending the local college and I did not want to be left behind. However, I soon discovered during my freshman year that I had
no idea what I was doing there. My advisor met with me and inquired as to what I expected to receive from my college education and what courses I
thought would assist me in achieving my goal. I was dumbfounded! I was so worried about being accepted to a college, pleasing my parents, and staying with my
friends that I never paused to consider what I expected from the experience. Perhaps before going to college, I should have spoken with Jane Schoenfeld Shropshire, president of the Fairfax,
Virginia-based Independent Educational Association. She advises prospective students, "Know what your long-term goal is and why you wish to continue your education" (Egodigwe 78). If you cannot
answer that question, you will have problems and I certainly did. I struggled all of my freshman year, and by sophomore year, I had yet to declare a major.
