answers either to precisely what the causes of drug abuse, or the effect that drugs produce, as there are a wide variety of drugs, with each one associated with its
own set of symptoms; possible causes (both sociological and physical); and possible effects, which are, once again, both sociological and physical. First of all, it is helpful to understanding drug
abuse to consider how to recognize dependence. Dependence is generally understood to refer to when an individual feels they have to use the drug regularly, typically on a
daily basis or even several times a day, in order to feel normal (Mayo Clinic Staff). Dependence is indicated also when an individual tries to stop using the drug and
fails; feels compelled to ensure that he or she has continuously access to a supply of the drug and/or spends money on the drug even when they cannot afford this
expense (Mayo Clinic Staff). Other symptoms of drug dependence are when individuals commit acts that they normally would not, such as stealing, in order to obtain the drug to which
they are addicted and also when they feel that they cannot deal with the problems in life without the drug(Mayo Clinic Staff). When healthcare providers discuss causation in regards
to drug addiction, this refers to two principal categories: environmental or sociological factors, such as the attitudes of family or friends toward drug use, and also physical factors, such as
