do?" In short, what were the processes of cause and effect that were at work in the breakup and what can be learned from this experience? Swiatek (2001) explains
that normative stressors are those factors that are typical of adolescent/young adult development, such as taking on the role of "girlfriend" or "boyfriend." Part of this normative stress is the
possibility of rejection (Swiatek, 2001). Psychologists tell us that people bring to relationships expectations that are shaped by their past and the relationships that they have experienced or observed, such
as their parents relationship (Waldinger, et al, 2002). In other words, we each possess a template, that is, a pattern, of what we think a relationship should be like, which
is based on our personal past experiences. These patterns consist of how we perceive ourselves; how we perceive the other person, and an "interpersonal script that links the self an
other" (Waldinger, et al, 2002, p. 17). These relationships schemas change slowly and people tend to apply them to "situations in the present, even when those situations are inappropriate" (Waldinger,
