political and economic climates served to establish the fundamental objectives of Reconstruction. The post-Civil War social, political and economic landscape was being rebuilt in such a way as to incorporate
the blacks into what was heretofore inaccessible, a plan brought forth by Lincoln and fraught with struggle throughout its long and painful fruition. The initial impression as Reconstruction began
was both positive and encouraging for the blacks, who had already benefited from emancipation; however, just as things were moving in the right direction, certain issues arose that ultimately placed
significant barriers between them and their continued freedom. Even with laws in place to protect this new-found emancipation, the injustice continued nonetheless due to the whites blatant disregard for such
legal safeguards. Fear resided at the crux of this indifference toward the law, inasmuch as the white population was fully aware of the potential social, political and economic backlash
that would occur if/when blacks had many of the same opportunities as they did (Woodward, 2001); not only would such provisions allow for the four million slaves to intermingle with
whites on a number of levels, but even more importantly is how the sheer force of numbers would surely cause an uprising of significant proportions (Franklin et al, 2000). In
