and more stories of child abuse are being revealed which have been perpetrated by Catholic priests. It has become a social problem which can no longer be ignored.
Understanding of this problem is vital if solutions are to be developed and implemented. Conflict Theory Basically, conflict theory suggests
that "power struggles will often take place if a balance cannot be struck between the consensus to keep things going as they are and the coercion necessary to prop up
the consensus" (Conflict Theory, 2002). In other words, the dynamic of the group or relationship between people is ultimately defined by the structure of power (Conflict Theory, 2002).
In terms of the Catholic priest problem, conflict theory would suggest that the unequal distribution of power does not allow for equitable relations, especially with children. Because the priest
ultimately has more power than the children, he is able to coerce them into things which they would never do without such coercion. In this way, the Catholic priest
is engaging in an obvious abuse of his power. Furthermore, the child whom is being molested or abused feels helpless to do anything about the abuse, since they
are likely committing such acts with the perpetrator out of imposed fear. Part of the coercion is likely based on verbally listed repercussions for the child if he/she breaks their
silence. This would be frightening to an adult, let alone a small child who is less able to distinguish between right and wrong and could easily interpret the words
and actions of the priest as being "normal" since their scope of reality is severely limited. Functional Theory The functional
