CAUTIs are prevalent in the hospital setting and include painful infections that if left untreated can lead to catheter blockages, sepsis and death. The formation of appropriate methods to
prevent CAUTI is an important component of catheter care. Solution Description This research study focuses on the current literature and evidence-based best
practice approaches to preventing CAUTIs in patients requiring catheterization. The implementation of a set protocol for the insertion, maintenance and observation of catheters is an essential part of this process.
This research study evaluates the current practices used to protect patients from CAUTIs, including the use of hydrogen peroxide or distilled vinegar in urinary catheter drainage bags to decrease
the presence of microbial infection, the use of bladder washout or irrigation with antiseptic solutions, and the use of preventative antibiotics. In addition, this protocol will relate directly to
the role of the nurse, who should be involved in the selection of catheter size and type; the use of aseptic techniques; conducting bladder washouts only when risk is determined;
investigation of infection; personal hygiene; drainage management; and catheters removal. In the acute care setting, the development of this type of protocol and a systematic approach to care is
essential to reducing the prevalence of CAUTIs. Research Support A range of supportive research will be utilized to develop the evidence-based approach to
care, including the identification of methods to be included in a protocol for the acute care setting. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the protocol will be linked to
existing research on the best approaches to reducing CAUTIs in the hospital setting. Implementation Plan Research will be conducted into the introduction of the new protocol in a hospital
