to say that is negative about Catherine the Great, one must also realize that there is always negative contributions made by any leader in the history of any nation. Catherine
was a woman who truly made some positive and powerful changes in her nation, standing as one of the most powerful women in history. She implemented new ways of looking
at Russia both from the perspectives of Russians and the rest of the world. She brought about political, economic, and cultural changes as she brought in new ideas and encouraged
the sciences and arts, and as she proved successful in exporting more products to the economic benefit of Russia. As one author
notes, "Catherine the Great...expanded the Russian Empire, improved administration, and energetically pursued the policy of Westernization (the process of changing to western ideas and traditions). Under her rule Russia grew
strong and rivaled the great powers of Europe and Asia" (Notable Biographies). She essentially brought Russia into the mainstream world, allowing the rest of the world to see Russia as
a power and a modern entity. With all of that in mind the following paper examines some of the accomplishments of Catherine the Great. Early Reign
As a young woman Catherine was apparently already determined to be a very powerful and effective leader. She "was ambitious as well as intelligent and
