noted empress of Russia, Catherine II, was born Sophia Augusta Frederica of Anhalt-Zerbst at Stettin to Christian Augustus of and Johanna Elizabeth of Holstein-Gottorp in 1729. Christian Augustus was
the ruler of Anhalt-Zerbst. Sophias rise to empress of Russia provides a fascinating glimpse into Russian history and its progression from a small state of little external influence to
a massive holding of major world influence. Marriage to Peter III Sophia was
privately educated by a French governess and various tutors. She married the Grand Duke Peter Feodorovich, the nephew of Empress Elizabeth of Russia, on September 1, 1745. Feodorovich
was next in line for the Russian throne and the marriage, like many in the same social circles of Catherine, was arranged by the families of the bride and groom.
Frederick the Great of Prussia was particularly interested in the marriage since it was a potential tool for use in improving his relations with Russia while at the same
time weakening the Austrian influence which overshadowed the existing relationships. Prior to the marriage, in an effort to win the allegiances of Elizabeth, Sophia changed her name to Ekaterina
