short story "Or Else, the Lightning God." Catherine Lim "Catherine Lim grew up in Malaysia and lives in Singapore" (Wagner). She was born in 1942 and today "holds a
Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics" (Wagner). Heir nterest in linguistics can perhaps be traced back to her childhood when she was sent to an English school where she became so proficient,
she states, in the English language that "after a time I became almost ashamed of my thunder god, my lightning god, didnt want to go to the temple any more
with my mother. I became fully inducted into English culture" (Dwyer). Along with writing many short stories as well as novels she
has "has published articles on sociolinguistics as well as on the problematics of writing fiction in Singaporean English," demonstrating her deep commitment to linguistics (Wagner). Prior to becoming a writer,
however, she lectured at the Regional Language Centre (RELC) in Singapore. She also frequently "contributes to social and political commentaries to local and foreign newspapers" (The Literary Encyclopedia).
