her classic works, My Antonia. This paper examines O Pioneers! Discussion The book is a story of people, but one of the major characters is the land itself. Barren at
first, but made to bear, it is a strong presence that permeates the novel. Like Antonia in the novel that bears her name, the protagonist of this novel is
a strong young woman, Alexandra Bergson. The Bergsons have immigrated from Sweden to Nebraska and settled near the fictional town of Hanover. Cather establishes the strength of her main character
immediately, by having her solve a small crisis and, during that same scene, rebuff a mans advances. When the novel opens, Alexandra and her younger brother Emil are in town
to get supplied and Emils kitten, scared by a dog, has climbed a pole and cant get down. The boy is in tears, but when Alexandra arrives, she immediately takes
charge, trying to coax the kitten down (Cather). When that fails, she finds a friend, a 15-year old boy named Carl Linstrum, who climbs the pole and rescues the little
cat (Cather). This is a simple scene but it illustrates two things very clearly. First, Alexandra knows what needs to be done (get the cat down) and how to do
it (she coaxes it). When that fails, she immediately forms another plan, to get help from someone else who is more likely to be successful. She also knows who this
person is and where to find him, and she goes to get him immediately. She isnt afraid to ask for help when she needs it, but she tries to solve
things on her own first. She is thus shown to be strong, intelligent and capable, all in the context of one very simple scene. During that same scene, a man
