The opening paragraph of the book uses the word "gray" a number of times to paint a picture of the difficulty of life on the Nebraska prairie where the book
is set. The land is gray and windswept; the sky is gray; and the snow trampled underfoot is gray as well. The life is hard, and many people give up
and return to the East, defeated by the land and the difficulty of making a living there. But the protagonist of the book, Alexandra Bergson, is both strong and determined.
She is the eldest child, and when her father dies, she becomes the real head of the family. She is a young woman with vision, and sees opportunities where most
people, including her brothers, see only problems. She buys up land surrounding their farm and when things turn around, as they always do, she becomes prosperous. But in doing so,
she and her brothers Oscar, Lou and Emil all have to work extremely hard, and Oscar and Lou resent her, though this isnt revealed until much later in the book.
Alexandras relationship with her brothers is one of the main themes of the book. It seems that Oscar and Lou are almost one person; they are difficult to distinguish from
one another because Lou seems to repeat everything Oscar says, and simply follows along with whatever he suggests. We can, in fact, think of them as a unit. They have
