It was during these times that people were rarely educated as well. They simply worked hard and hope was not often seen by many common individuals. In light of this
they needed something that would lift them up and see that perhaps their afterlife may prove more wondrous and hopeful. It was the church that gave them hope and presented
them with a sense of wealth and beauty in their otherwise oppressive lives. As one author notes, in relationship to the church: "Not only did it serve as a way
to lift their spirits, it also gave them something to look forward to, an afterlife."2 It was a place that people could come and see ultimate beauty and see
hope. They could gather together and do something besides work. And, in many cases people would travel hundreds of miles to witness such beauty, relief, and hope. It is
interesting to note that many people would, today, argue that the money, the vast sums, spent on these structures should have been used to help the poor, of which there
were many. However, in all honesty, it seems the people were far happier with churches and cathedrals and they did benefit the people in other ways: "Contrary to some popular
opinion that the money spent on these monumental tributes to the sovereignty of God could have better been spent on providing for the poor, these building projects provided a tremendous
boost for the economies of the cities so endowed."3 Churches and cathedrals altered through time, taking on three predominant forms. These forms were the Romanesque, the Gothic, and the
