cathedrals are the Canterbury Cathedral, the Cologne Cathedral, and the St. John Divine Cathedral. The following paper examines them each individually and the compares and contrasts the three.
Canterbury Cathedral The origins of this cathedral actually date back to the arrival of St. Augustine in 596. "He came from Rome, sent
by Pope Gregory the Great. It is said that Gregory had been struck by the beauty of Angle slaves he saw for sale in the city market and despatched Augustine
and some monks to convert them to Christianity" (Canterbury Cathedral, 2007). However, it was not until the 10th century that it truly noted as having become a cathedral as a
cathedral community emerged (Canterbury Cathedral, 2007). The original foundations of St. Augustine became covered and a stone cathedral was built, by the Normans, in 1070 (Canterbury Cathedral, 2007).
Its style is very gothic, but there are also elements of the emergence of new thought and ideals, offering perhaps a less harsh design
than a lot of Gothic styles. It possessed a great deal of stained glass as well. It was a structure that was built towards the end of the Dark Ages
which was the time wherein most of the European population had experienced the Black Plague. As such its Gothic, but also softer ornamentation, reflects ideals of hope and the future.
Cologne Cathedral Interestingly enough, the history of this cathedral is almost as old as the previous. Excavations have shown that it
was an important temple location, and also a location of an early Church that extended from around the 6th century into the 9th century. The real historical foundations of the
