The initial process looked at a range of areas which were deemed as non-essential, this included tasks such as printing, medical services, missed maintenance and building maintenance, and transportation. There were no areas which were not actively considered as potential areas for outsourcing. As time goes by outsourcing continues the assessment may be argued as becoming less objective as there are prizes in place which are not based on only cost and efficiency. For example, the case study tells us that IBM and Sabre were preferred partners due to the existing internal relationships with the companies. Furthermore, when additional outsourcing was being considered the input into the decision-making process was very limited. EDS was not asked where competing quote for the cost of the services as it was believed that is they would know they did not have any real opportunity of getting the contract. IBM were only asked for prices after Cathay Pacific has already decided to outsource the tasks. Therefore, although the initial stages of outsourcing undertaken in objective manner, it may be argued that the latter stages were more subjective, however it can also be argued there are many aspects to award in outsourcing contract other than simply cost, such as trust (Thompson, 2007). This is illustrated with the way a manager at one of the meetings asks how the contracts are awarded if they were not given to those suppliers with the best offering for the company.
