Earring" painted in 1665 by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer could have been (Hurley). It is the story of many different characters in a period of time in the painters
life. One of those characters is Catharina, his wife. The following paper presents a character analysis of Catharina. Catharina "In Tracy
Chevaliers Girl with a Pearl Earring, the narrator, Griet, is a quiet Dutch girl from a family that has fallen on hard times. She takes a job as a servant
in the household of the famous painter Vermeer" and inadvertently becomes the focus of a great deal of tension (Wu). It is not that she is a trouble maker, but
that the problems in the household are only brought more in to light through her presence. And, it is in the character of Catharina that one truly sees the problems.
"Vermeers wife Catharina, long banished from her husbands studio for her clumsiness and lack of genuine interest in art, is immediately wary
of Griet, a visually talented girl who exhibits signs of artistic promise" (ReadingGroupGuides). Catharina is seen, by Griet, as a very "condescending mistress" for she is always grumpy and short
tempered (Teenink). She also seemingly has an apparent lack of feeling for art (Hurley). But, Catharina is obviously wary of Griet because she gets to be involved in her husbands
life in a way she never will. Catharina, and any other reasonable woman in the same situation, is nothing but a lonely woman whose husband has dismissed her. Such a
loneliness breeds wariness and bitterness. It is noted that Catharina is clumsy and has no real ability to understand art. These are the reasons why she is not allowed
