The character of Holden is constantly trying to escape the truth that he is no longer a child and must now become an adult. This truth essentially drives him to a form of insanity, evident by the fact that the beginning and the end of the book are supposed written by Holden while he is in a mental institute. One of the most important people in Holdens life is his sister. He clings to her in a very powerful psychological manner because she is young and innocent and is really the only person that Holden feels he can trust. He does not want her to grow up and feels that he must do whatever he can to protect her from becoming an adult. These issues are deeply related to one of the most potent scenes towards the end of Salingers book, the scene wherein Holden watches as his sister rides a merry-go-round at the zoo. The following paper examines the significance of this particular scene from chapter 25 of Salingers novel. The Merry-Go-Round As mentioned in the introduction, Holden is a young man who is doing all he can to avoid growing up. He has just been advised, by a mentor of his, that he really needs to face the truth and become a more aware young man or he will find a great deal of trouble in running from truth. Holden leaves his house disturbed, believing that this mentor made a sexual pass at him, thus reinforcing how much he cannot trust adults. He seeks out his sister, with the plan of seeing her one more time before he leaves for good. Holden takes his sister to the zoo where she rides the merry-go-round.
