Castro is stubborn. At the same time, the social, cultural, political and economic consequences of the regime have not been all that detrimental. While poverty is a problem, the
truth is that the regime had done better economically than its communist counterpart U.S.S.R., a nation that had implemented a failed system. Others say that Cuba is failing as well.
While Cuba today is still controversial, its history provides an understanding of why things are the way they are and why Castro has some support. Unlike some of the horrific
leaders of the contemporary world, Castro has done some good, and it started in the 1950s when Cuba was under a detrimental dictator. II. Historical Background The Cuban
Revolution in part may be remembered as an attack on the Mossad Barracks by a small group of poorly armed Cuban revolutionaries (Hickson, 1996). It was an attack
that failed in its primary aim but it was one that is considered to be an action that launched the Cuban Revolution in the first place (1996). When happened
was that Fulgencio Batista, the leader of the "sergeants revolt" of 1933, had ruled Cuba de facto for about twenty years previously (1996). He had been running a slow third
in presidential elections when he staged a military coup in March of 1952 and as president, he operated as a pawn who catered to sugar barons, banks, gambling syndicates and
the corporate interests of North America (1996). The government was corrupt when Castro decided to stage a coup himself. In general, Batista answered any opposition with assassination and would quell
