time to find out what she wants to do. Though this is Marys explanation of the problem, some of her comments suggest that she can benefit from imagery work,
in which she attempts to relate possible goals or personal expectations through imagery. The following is a possible therapeutic dialogue with Mary that illustrates the use of imagery: Therapist:
Mary, if you could imagine yourself in your perfect job, what would you be doing? Mary: I think I want to be a dental assistant. You
know, they help people and you can work independently. I dont think it would be boring work. Therapist: So what do you need to do to become a
dental assistant? Mary: I dont know, probably go back to school. I dont have my GED yet, though. Therapist: Can you think of some steps that we
could write down right now that would help you get those things done? Mary: Well, sure, but you know, that doesnt change the fact that my boyfriend wont be
happy. I dont have a job whether I go to school or not. Therapist: But do you think your boyfriend might be less agitated if he felt
that you were working towards a career goal? Mary: I dont know. I just know he needs to mellow out. Therapist: Mary, I want you
