Short Synopsis The story is set during World War II in Casablanca, Morocco, where the "tough guy with the heart of gold" Richard "Rick" Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) runs Ricks Caf? Americain (Dirks). Casablanca is a "way station" on the route from Nazi-occupied Europe to America; a plane leaves Casablanca daily for Lisbon; from there, the Pan American Clipper flies to the States (Dirks, 2005). Refugees from all over Europe who are trying to escape the German onslaught come through Casablanca, and many are stuck there, because its necessary to obtain a "Letter of Transit" to leave French Morocco, and they are extremely expensive and very scarce. Among the refugees are Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), a heroic Czech resistance leader who escaped from a concentration camp, and his wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman). Ilsa and Rick fell in love years earlier in Paris; when the Germans marched in, they agreed to meet at the train station. But when Rick got there, Ilsa didnt come-she only sent him a good-bye letter. They were separated, until now when she comes back into his life. The rest of the film details the relationships among the three principles, as well as the crafty Police Prefect, Louis Renault (Claude Rains). Two German couriers are murdered and the Letters of Transit they were carrying are stolen; Rick now has those letters and the question is whether or not he will give them to Victor and Ilsa, or use them for Ilsa and himself, for the two have admitted that they are still deeply in love with each other.
