Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction The Middle East since the beginning of the 20th century has had very little say in its own governance. This paper describes the way in which World War I spurred the major powers, particularly Britain and France, to intervene in the region to bring it into their spheres of influence. Discussion Richard Davis, who wrote a fascinating paper about the influence of Britain in the Middle East in the early 20th century, proves to be a good source of information for this topic. He notes that although Britain is an island, it doesnt exist in "splendid isolation," but is an effective actor on the world stage as well as in Europe. Because it is both a European nation and an insular one, its interests overlap; one of the most obvious examples of this is its Middle Eastern concerns (Davis). The Middle East was never part of the British Empire, but because of its strategic location and because of the Suez Canal, it provided a direct route to British interests farther East (Davis). When oil was discovered in Iran, the region became even more important to the European powers, including Britain and France (Davis). The Ottoman (Turkish) Empire began to wane at this time; it was often referred to as the "Sick Man of Europe." When it collapsed, it left a power vacuum which European countries, eager to exploit the area in support of their war effort, were quick to fill (Davis).
