conversation goes to the idea that once people marry, get old together, and know each other for a long time, the love turns to hate. Of course, the truth is
that in society today, marriages fail about half the time, so Carvers words are not unexpected. That is, couples do talk like that, but what the reader might surmise is
that all love is like this. Carver only takes a look at a microcosm of society. Again, half the marriages end in failure, but not all marriages end the same
way. Thus, Carvers writing becomes a stereotypical and uncomplimentary look at love. After reading the story, one might wonder if true love is real or just an illusion. Downes remarks:
"Carvers book, like its title, is an unfinished question about love, an inquiry that forgets itself midway and gets hopelessly lost in its panic to escape the maze" (49). On
some level, Downes makes a good point. Carver only examines a small part of love, but the implication is that all marriages go stale. Downes goes on to relay information
from the story and remarks on the fact that one character cynically asks "What do any of us really know about love?...It seems to me were just beginners at love"
(Carver qtd. in Downes 49). It does beg a question about love. What is love? Is true love real? Again, from reading the story, one might be quite disappointed. It
is reminiscent of Carly Simons rant "Thats the Way Ive Always Heard it Should Be" by reveling the worst parts of family life. Yet, focusing on the negative is easy
