story about two couples who sit together one afternoon/evening and discuss love. They did not intend to get together and start this conversation but they all became immersed as the
topic meant something to each of them, and made each of them think deeply about love and their relationships. Throughout this afternoon/evening there are different approaches to discussing and presenting
love as it comes from Carver. In the end the reader of this story is made to sit and ponder themselves, like the couple, as it involves a true definition
of what love is as it relates to partnerships and friends. The following paper examines the discussions of love in the story and illustrates how the characters cannot define what
love really is and how the reader is left to think about their own understanding of love. Carvers What We Talk About When We Talk About Love The
characters in this story are the narrator, Nick, his wife Laura, Mel, and his wife Terri. In the beginning of the story Nick tells the reader that Mel is a
cardiologist, a heart doctor, and as such the stage seems set to understand the nature of love, and perhaps how people associate it with the heart but yet the heart
has ultimately nothing to do with emotions. Although Mel is obviously a learned man, and a doctor and perhaps arrogant to some extent, as many doctors are, he is a
man with troubles and a man whose job is to work on the heart, but a man who really does not understand love. He surely desires to know what love
