she falls in love and while she was perhaps happier without that love, she falls into the place of love and life is good. But then things go wrong and
in that plot line we see McCullers use snow in a very symbolic manner in her book. The following paper examines how the author uses snow to symbolize something other
than simply snow. Snow in "The Ballad of the Sad Caf?" As mentioned, the story is one that shows the evolution of a woman and a caf? and
the people who regard this caf? as a sort of home. Miss Amelia, the primary character, has fallen in love but then suddenly her ex-husband has come to town. And
with his arrival comes the snow. The town has never experienced snow before and many of the people are confused, but many also enjoy the snow, they are unsure
what it means. Even the preacher is trying to figure out how to define the snow in a sermon, while many people are simply amazed. It is change, and it
symbolizes heavy choices, heavy responsibility, and perhaps many different things to many different people. It also helps us see the character of Marvin, Miss Amelias ex-husband.
Where Miss Amelia is concerned we see that she sensed the snow as an indication that she needed to make some decision in her life and
she preferred to ignore this need (McCullers 242). She preferred to close her windows against the snow, to ignore it because she was not comfortable making choices, especially this one,
