Ivy Hairs work "Carnival of Fury: Robert Charles and the New Orleans Race Riot of 1900" the author simply gathers information to present the reader with a look at one
man and the events surrounding his life. The following paper provides a review of this book. Carnival of Fury The topic of the book, as mentioned, and as seen
in the title of the book, is Robert Charles. It took place in 1900 when blacks were struggling still with the society as they tried to achieve dreams promised them
at the end of the Civil War. In this book the author traces Charles life, born into slavery, and thus gives the reader a wide time frame in American history.
When looking for a thesis, such can usually be found near the beginning of a book when the author wishes to offer reasons for their writing of one subject
or another. In this case Hair states, "Trapped by a problem that neither he nor the world around him was capable of solving, he and his experience tell us much
about his troubled time and place" (Hair, 1986; 3). In this we see that Hair simply seems to desire to convey to the reader a history of one man and
the times that surrounded this one man in order that we, as citizens, can better understand the tumultuous times. This is supported in statements made previously where Hair indicated that
