sources cited. SA119pel.doc Carmen "La Coja" Santos is a rather complex character who, by the time she turns forty, has lost more than most in their
lives. Carmen appears in Ana Castillos Peel My Life Like an Onion and is a deep, dark portrait of a woman. Unmarried, Carmen had been having an affair with a
married man who is in charge of the troupe she dances with, and then she would eventually start an affair with his godson. It was something that Carmen seemed to
hold as all-important and these affairs were essential to the development of this complex character. To her, they were not insignificant flings and the relationships that ensued with each of
the men meant something. It is usually the case that lovers do add something to a person or character, in that much attention is paid to them. Carmen, for examples,
has fantasies about the men, even after they leave. In fact, there was a time when they would leave her for quite awhile, and this was a rather significant jolt
for the character that would seem to be lost without them. Although it is unusual that one would have a relationship with a man and a relative of his, this
makes for emotions in the character that is accentuated. Everything is larger than life. In some sense, it adds conflict, but it also provides an additional thrill, to which Carmen
will not admit. Having an affair with these two had created a rift in the relationship between the men, something that added a dimension to Carmens character. She was not
