the novel was written?the late 1950s. The novel opens with Cruz on the brink of death. His thoughts are jumbled and confused as they drift towards his past. This
jumbling of thoughts gives the novel its structure as Fuentes will pull the reader back into the present and then off into another piece of Cruzs past as his mind
drifts. Pieces of the past become incredibly mixed in Cruzs dying memory. The stream of consciousness "feel" that this gives to the novel doesnt so much give the reader specific
detail on Cruz or Mexico as much as it conveys what it felt like to be Mexican during that time of upheaval. It also shows what sorts of forces were
set into motion by the Revolution that influenced the course of Mexico in the twentieth century. Cruz is a successful newspaper owner and land baron. While he is obviously drawn
as a tragic figure, it really is rather difficult for the reader to have much empathy for Cruz. For a great deal of his life, hes been arrogant, audacious, egocentric
and corrupt. In his youth, Cruz fought bravely during the Mexican Revolution. However, in the process, he lost his idealism?forever. During the war, he also lost the only
woman who ever loved him. Fuentes has him pay for his greed and love of power in that all of the subsequent personal relationships that Cruz has during the rest
of his life all fail. This is particularly true in regards to his marriage. In the opportunistic atmosphere that existed after the Revolution, Cruz marries the daughter of a hacienda
owner and proceeds to use their family connections and money to amass and even-larger fortune. Cruz is very attracted to Catalina and loves her in his own fashion; however, Catalina
