However, this story is about far more than just the adventures of idealist revolutionaries, it is also a story about love, about relations between Mexico and the United States,
and about the dynamics of male/female relationships. In this way, Fuentes accomplishes the daunting task of interweaving a variety of complex elements that in the end serve to allow
the reader insight not just into a culture, but into the lives of individual characters. Fuentes himself is one of Latin Americas
most respected authors, and in this way this story carries the favor of his reputation (Biography of Carlos Fuentes, 2004). Fuentes not only manages to invoke a great
deal of emotion and intrigue regarding these historic issues, but he also presents them in such a manner that the reader is absorbed entirely into the tale. The telling
for Fuentes becomes the entertainment, and the message a wonderful by-product. "Major themes in Fuentess work are the limitless power of fantasy, the dilemma of national identity, and the
promise and failure of the Mexican revolution" (Carlos Fuentes, 2004). As the story proceeds, the reader learns the main character in the novel
is that of Abrose Bierce, who was an American journalist but disappeared in Mexico in 1913. After joining the revolutionaries, the plan is to meet with Pancho Villa.
But in the process many complications arise, such as the emergence of Harriet Winslow on the scene, who becomes the love interest of both Bierce and Tomas Arroyo, who heads
the revolutionaries. Winslow had arrived as a tutor for the children of the hacienda owner, only to discover their absence upon her arrival. However, as the relationship between
