The field of psychotherapy owes much to Carl Rogers. Rogers is considered one of the founders of
humanistic theory. His Theory of Personality not only recognized the importance of environment in shaping our self actualization but also emphasized that the environment and our interaction with it
was constantly changing. Rogers contended that the environment is as important, or perhaps even more important, than genetics in our psychological development. According to the humanistic theory, healthy human
beings seek their full potential. Indeed, human beings modify their behavior in accordance with their perceived need. The manner in which
psychologists explain psychological development and offer therapy can vary radically. So too can the way they view the human being. Blair-Broeker, Ernst, and Meyers (2007) clarify that in
the person-centered therapy advocated by Rogers the client is viewed as a whole person, not as the sum of their various parts, not as the sum of "brain, neurons, emotions,
and so on" (p. 25). Some psychologists continue to believe that one single factor determines psychological development. Others, like
Rogers, contend that instead there is a multitude of diverse factors which blend together to determine that development. There is, of
