This concept differentiated Rogers from his predecessors in the field of psychology. Biographical detail and Early influences on Rogers Carl Ransom Rogers was born on January 8 in 1902 in a suburb of Chicago. Thanks to his fathers success as an engineer, his family was solidly middle class and he was able to attend college. While attending graduate studies at the Union Theological Seminary, he recognized that the "approach to religious education," which he had formulated, had the "potential for achieving social progress" and that, also, this approach was actually inimical to religion (Gordon, Feb 1997, p. 7). This led Rogers to leave the seminary and enroll at Teachers College as a student in clinical and educational psychology (Gordon, Feb 1997). While at Teachers College, Rogers was influenced by E.L. Thorndike, who was a leading figure in the development of testing for the army that was highly significant towards the development of intelligence tests by psychologists (Gordon, Feb 1997). Another figure at Teachers College that influenced Rogers was John Dewey. At that time the Teachers College was the international center for the "dissemination of Deweys educational philosophy" (Gordon, Feb 1997, p. 7). Rogers did not have direct contact with Dewey, but rather was exposed to Deweys philosophy thought the lecture of William H. Kilpatrick. Gordon (Feb 1997) asserts that it is possible to identify key themes from Dewey in Rogers later works on therapy (p. 7). For example, Deweys educational theory stressed the significance of experience as the basic material from which one learns (Gordon, Feb 1997).
