the increasingly complex and multicultural world of counseling, Rogerian therapeutic approaches have been found to be beneficial in addressing the needs of a varied client population.
Rogers identified two primary and intertwined concepts in his therapeutic process, congruence and therapeutic presence. Though Rogers placed considerable emphasis on the impacts of these
factors in creating an empathic response in developing cohesiveness, he left it to other therapists to address the exact application of these components. In developing a conceptual view of
the counseling process, it is necessary to have a workable understanding of congruence and therapeutic presence as they define the actions of both the client and the therapist. The
