the classic universal themes of human experience. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung would point to the recurrence of this age-old theme - in literature, myths, movies, and myriad other cultural artifacts
- as an example of a motif that continues to be relevant to all humans, one that he believes springs forth from the latent recesses of our shared unconscious psyches.
Jung believed that the crux of conflict in the human psyche was a result of the division between the conscious (or known) and
the unconscious (or unknown), with the ego having a place in both (Jacobi 6). He believed the conscious occupied a smaller place in the psyche than did the unconscious (Jacobi
6) and the image of an iceberg, with its small tip above water representing only a fraction of its mass underwater, is a particularly appropriate image for this relationship. The
realm of the unconscious is itself divided into two parts: the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. The former is made up of remnants of each individuals experience - "forgotten,
repressed, subliminally perceived, thought, and felt matter of every kind" (Jacobi 8) - which can be beckoned into the conscious at any time. The latter does not contain personal experience
but collective experience, an inherited set of "primal data" (Jacobi 8) that all people share. It is a compilation of universal coding, instincts, and archetypes, which manifest themselves in everyday
life as motifs that appear in the real world as dreams, myths, and fairy tales. Jung believed that the collective unconscious and its archetypes explained why similar spiritual elements, myths,
