impacts in terms of community development. This is particularly true in the Caribbean where not only is the infrastructure needed to support tourism often inadequate, but also traditional cultures
can sometimes sustain a negative blow from continuous exposure to the non-traditional impacts that go hand-in-hand with tourism. So too can the environment take a negative blow from tourism.
Never-the-less, tourism is becoming a prevalent focus for much of the Caribbean. In the Caribbean as well as elsewhere tourism can be
the means of procuring much needed revenue. The Caribbean stands to benefit quite extensively, in fact, because of the diversity of tourism opportunities that are available to it.
Ecotourism and so-called nature-based tourism, for example, is a very real draw in this region. The Caribbean, after all, is noted for its beauty and its remarkable ecological diversity.
The Caribbean is also noted for its cultural and historical value. Both ecotourism and archeotourism thrive in this type of environment.
Tourism has been historically attracted to areas with rich cultural heritage. Some countries and regions are simply considered more desirable tourist destinations than others. The relative
attraction of an area, however, is dependent on the tourists specific interest. In comparison to Europe, for example, the Caribbean might be viewed as of secondary cultural interest.
In reality, there is no more culturally rich region than the Caribbean. Admittedly, the Caribbean has relatively few historic sites and great museums. What the Caribbean does
