What was once populated primarily by the older sect, Carnival has been successful in marketing pleasure cruising as a vacation for every age group. Royal Caribbean, on the other hand, has attempted to move away from the glitz and sparkle typically associated with cruise life and moved decidedly toward an unique vantage point. Cruising is not what it used to be, thanks in part to the overwhelming modifications Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Lines has made throughout the industry. Once thought of only as a destination for the elderly and retired, pleasure cruising has turned into the fastest growing portion of the American hospitality industry, with an increase of six hundred percent since 1980. The number one and number two companies within the industry have been instrumental in the metamorphosis that has taken place, establishing cruise vacations as "a hit with the masses" (Rice, 1989, p. 108), greatly responsible for the industrys take of five billion dollars back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, when choosing one or the other for a Caribbean cruise, Royal Caribbean is no competition for Carnival. Carnivals cornerstone to success within the cruising industry is the fact that the ships themselves have turned into as much of a destination as the ports to which they travel. Onboard activities and amenities have expanded to such a degree, that passengers have been known to forego the ports of call in exchange for staying on the ship.
