Federal, state, county, municipal, and campus police forces, all of which comprise what criminal justice scholars call the "first arm" of the criminal system (Glover, 1993). Law enforcement has in fact evolved into a complex science, and the opportunity to specialize in tasks other than street patrol has increased a great deal (1993). This has likely attracted individuals who are interested in police work but do not see themselves as beat cops. Many federal law enforcement jobs are found under the heading of the United States Department of Justice (1993). The U.S. Marshalls, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Agency are some of the more recognizable branches (1993). In order to seek employment in such areas, it is not necessary to have a liberal arts background or even a degree in criminal justice (1993). Science and technical backgrounds are also sought out to perform functions in areas of support at various law enforcement agencies (1993). There are a variety of jobs necessary at the federal level because areas such as surveillance, verifying documents and so forth require specific technical or science-related skills. The FBI also looks for people with law degrees as well as accountants (1993).
