they wish to pursue. As one author notes, "Educational requirements for recreation workers range from a high school diploma-or sometimes less for many summer jobs-to graduate degrees for some administrative
positions in large public recreation systems. Full-time career professional positions usually require a college degree with a major in parks and recreation or leisure studies, but a bachelors degree in
any liberal arts field may be sufficient for some jobs in the private sector" (CollegeGrad.com, 2002). It is also interesting, though not surprisingly, to note that "Specialized training or
experience in a particular field, such as art, music, drama, or athletics, is an asset for many jobs. Some jobs also require certification" (CollegeGrad.com, 2002). Such a certification may involve
a lifesaving certificate if the job entails water activities of any kind. In addition, there are some "Graduates of associate degree programs in parks and recreation, social work, and other
human services disciplines" who "also enter some career recreation positions" (CollegeGrad.com, 2002). From this information it becomes clear that there are many ways one can go about getting an
education for a career in recreation. In the case of a YMCA director, if that position involves actually directing the employees, one can note that administrative skills would also be
necessary. Of course, if an individual merely wanted to be the one in charge of directing YMCA activities and not directing the entire establishment, the requirements would be less, though
administrative skills would certainly not hurt in the job search. Overall, however, we can see that a broad range of classes would help the individual who wished to be a
YMCA director. A lifesaving certificate, along with knowledge of physical health and training, and other minor focuses such as art and music would greatly benefit the individual. In light of
