functions of both animals and plants in their natural habitat as well as in other locations. In other words, physiology studies life. Physiologists may specialize in different functions of life,
such as growth, respiration, movement, or even on a specific area of the organisms system. Usually those who specialize hold a Ph.D. in the field, such as in the reproductive
system, the heart and circulatory system, the nervous system, the digestive system, etc. (The El Group, 2009). Physiologists try to answer questions that range from the "functions of a single
cell to the interactions between human populations and our environment here on earth, the moon, and beyond" (The American Physiological Society, 2009). To answer the questions, physiologists may work in
the field, laboratories, or even in space (The American Physiological Society, 2009). This is a vast field that incorporates any function of the smallest particle of life. This is
an essential science for our knowledge, in fact, the APS says: "it is the foundation upon which we build our knowledge of what life is, how to treat disease, and
how to cope with stresses imposed upon our bodies by different environments" (The American Physiological Society, 2009). When physiologists study the functions of healthy organisms, the results provide insight and
clues for healing unhealthy organs and system. This is a general field that uses techniques from numerous other disciplines. These include anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and others (The
El Group, 2009). They use "electronic, optical, chemical and mechanical devices to discover how the body operates" (The El Group, 2009). Physiologists must hold at least a Bachelors degree
in either physiology or a related field (The El Group, 2009). Most go on for a graduate and then a post-graduate degree (The El Group, 2009). The more education the
