Since the patient, Steven, in the case study, is newly diagnosed, the health care practitioner can assume that both he and his family may be quite unfamiliar with both diabetes itself and the impact which it has on the lifestyle of patient, family and friends. Diabetes UK (2004) point out that the provision of diabetes services tends to be complex, since care is provided by various professional bodies including GPs, community health workers, diabetes specialists and the patients themselves: good outcomes are therefore very much dependent on such care being effectively integrated. In type 1 diabetes, a deficiency in the pancreas means that insulin is either not produced at all, or only in reduced amounts; since insulin is responsible for transmitting blood sugar out of the bloodstream to other cells, an insulin deficiency means too much sugar remains in the blood and too little energy is transferred to other cells.
